Last Trio concerts: returns only

Such is the demand for the Trio’s final concerts, the Wigmore Hall has confirmed that there are now returns only for their last two concerts on Wednesday 11 and Friday 13 January 2012. The first concert on Saturday 7 January was breathtaking. If you are coming for the last two, we hope you enjoy it.

Hyperion Record of the Month

Hyperion’s Record of the Month for May 2011 is the final recording from The Florestan Trio. Shostakovich’s two piano trios (No.1 Op 8 and No.2 Op 67) sit either side of his wonderful, and rarely performed ‘Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok’ Op 127, sung by Susan Gritton. Florestan Festival at Peasmarsh

With eight concerts in four days, this last Florestan Trio festival in Peasmarsh includes cherished chamber music from Mozart, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Schumann. Czech flavour is evident with works by Dvořák, including the ‘Dumky’ Trio and the beautiful ‘Silent Woods’ for cello and orchestra, while Robert Philip takes a look at the ‘folk’ music influences on Dvořák, Bartók and Ligeti in his Sunday talk.

On Tuesday 26 October 2010 at 1.30pm, BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting a programme about the life of Rosa Newmarch, who was pivotal in introducing the composer Leos Janacek to the British public in the 1920s. The programme is by Peter Avis, who as well as being the principal page-turner for the Florestan Festival, also writes and lectures about music.

An interesting article about philanthropy in the arts appeared in Thursday’s online edition of The Guardian newspaper (21 October 2010). This kind of giving has always been incredibly important to the Florestan Trust, and particularly so for the Florestan Festival. Vernon Ellis, one of our Trustees, is interviewed.
